Drastic steps are needed to curb illegal migration.

In order to curb illegal migration, drastic measures are needed, which is why Hungary, joining the Netherlands, will request an exemption from the application of the European Union's asylum and migration rules, the minister responsible for European Union affairs announced in Strasbourg on Wednesday.

Speaking to Hungarian journalists, János Bóka said that the Hungarian government had been informed that the government of the Netherlands had announced that they would request that the Netherlands be exempted from the application of EU asylum and migration rules.

The Hungarian government also sees the need for drastic measures to curb illegal migration, so the Hungarian government wants to take a similar initiative, the head of the ministry said, and then announced:

Hungary also requests an exemption from the application of the European Union's asylum and migration rules, if this is made possible by amending the EU's basic treaty.

"We will take the necessary legal and administrative steps. Of course, Hungary is a committed member of the Schengen area and will remain so in the future," János Bóka added in his statement.

On Wednesday, the Dutch government submitted an official request to the European Commission in order to be excluded from the new asylum and migration pact that will come into force in 2026.

Dutch Migration Minister Marjolein Faber wrote in a letter to the Brussels executive that the new Dutch government wants to drastically reduce migration to the Netherlands "so that it can continue to fulfill its constitutional obligations: providing housing, healthcare and education". .
