"I stood on the main stage at the Hungarian Theater for the first time, and since then it has been the struggle and desire of my soul to make the theater as good as possible," said Károly Eperjes, Kossuth and Jászai Mari award-winning actor, permanent member of the Society of the Immortals, who is the 2024/25- next season, in addition to his work as a director and actor, he presents himself as the artistic director of the Hungarian Theatre.
– Ten years ago, I already had the opportunity to return, and then things started very well with the same program, but then they continued differently, and I did not sign the contract. Now, however, I feel an inner urge to make the Hungarian Theater a truly worthy theater. Because it has not yet fully regained its dignity, and the repertoire contains performances that unfortunately do not represent what the dignity of this theater should represent - the actor told the Magyar Színház.
Eperjes envisions plays that "don't destroy or hurt youth and families, but protect them with love, teach them the right values and entertain them nobly, in the truest sense of the word."
The new artistic director added: "In the current repertoire, Romeo and Juliet, which was renovated and received a new cast in the 2023/24 season, is already like this. The upcoming Hamlet, which I am eagerly trying to make with my colleagues, as well as The Beggar and the Prince, which we will also present soon, already represent this set of values. But such were Ármány és szerelm or Legyetek hokók, if you know, which, to my great heartache, were unfortunately removed from the repertoire. We plan to see them again soon in a new cast.”
