The planned bill would allow all fathers more freedom to determine the time of paternity leave, thus more fathers would be able to take advantage of it.
According to the package of employment laws, which will be submitted to the Parliament on Tuesday, the period available for requesting paternity leave may be doubled, from the current two months to four, the Ministry of National Economy announced.
With the amendments affecting paternity leave effective from 2023, the number of paternity leave days has already been doubled, from five to ten days, so fathers can spend more time with their newborn child, thereby contributing to the development of close family relationships, the ministry's announcement on Tuesday reads. The purpose of the proposed amendment to the law is to provide all fathers with greater flexibility in the timing of paternity leave, thereby promoting a balance between work and private life.
Currently, a minimum of two months is available to take paternity leave after the birth of a child, but in many cases this period is not enough to make proper use of the leave. Among other things, in the case of newborns requiring hospitalization for several months due to premature birth or for other reasons, or due to delays in court recognition of paternity.
The planned bill would give all fathers more room to determine when to take paternity leave, so more fathers would be able to take advantage of it
- they highlighted.
They emphasized that paternity leave is particularly favorable, as it can be taken at a time suitable to the father's request, in a maximum of two installments, so it can be fully adapted to the family circumstances. Paid paternity leave means significant support for families, to which the state also contributes:
employers can claim back the pay for the first five days of paternity leave and its public charges, which increases the willingness to take the leave.
The law amendment proposal would also clarify the legal concerns related to the on-call position, as well as include an amendment aimed at promoting participation in the election, and also propose technical refinements in the regulation of the occupational health and safety law and the wage supplement, the NGM informed.
