We witnessed a terrifying interlude in the Netherlands-Hungary NL match, shortly after kick-off the match had to be interrupted after Ádám Szalai fell ill on the bench.
According to local Dutch reports, the second coach of the Hungarian national team, Ádám Szalai, had an epileptic seizure during Saturday's Nations League match.
We witnessed a terrifying interlude in the Netherlands-Hungary NL match. In the seventh minute, the match was suddenly interrupted: Ádám Szalai, assistant to national team captain Marco Rossi and the former captain of the national team, needed long-term care after collapsing. The crew and the substitutes surrounded Szalai and the medical staff treating him, who was eventually carried away on a stretcher by half of the dressing room.
The 36-year-old specialist probably had an epileptic seizure
The on-site reports were later confirmed by Wout Weghorst, the author of the Dutch's first goal. The attacker was shocked by the medical emergency:
"Obviously, you understand very quickly that this is a serious situation. It's obvious from the way everyone reacts."
Weghorst talked to the Hungarian players on the pitch while Ádám Szalai was being treated:
"I talked to Willy (Willi Orbán, defender of RB Leipzig - ed.) in German. I've heard that you've had epileptic fits before, and you've had them before, just not in this severity and form. I always withdraw a little from this, I don't handle this kind of thing well".
The striker, currently playing for Ajax, knows Ádám Szalai from the Bundesliga:
“Yes, I have indeed heard of it. He used to play for Mainz. Of course I know him.”
The legendary Hungarian forward informed the fans on his official social media page that he is fine:
"Thanks for the many messages, I'm fine"
Szalai wrote to everyone's great relief
