In Tata, on the shores of Öreg-tó, the 24th Wild Goose Association is organized in the last days of November.

On the first day of the event, Friday, November 29, from 5 p.m., experts from the Tatabánya Amateur Astronomy Club and the TIT Postztoczky Károly Astronomer and Museum will give a lecture about the sights of the autumn starry sky. , what we as an average person can do to protect birds.

Early risers can have one of the greatest experiences of the crowd on Saturday from six o'clock in the morning. After sunrise, all the birds that spend the night on the lake wake up at the same time and go in search of food.

The geese land on the water again at four o'clock in the evening, the evening retreat is also spectacular, especially against a cloudless sky. The wedge-shaped shoals can be followed with binoculars and a large-scale projector set up on the shore, with the help of an expert commentator.

During the day, visitors can see many presentations related to nature conservation. Children can enjoy a creative playhouse, a playful bird search with binoculars and a bird memory game. At the fair, artisans, primary producers and folk artists offer their wares, but you can buy bird and nature conservation tools, as well as books and paintings depicting birds.

The special feature of the Tatai Wild Geese Association is that Öregtó, which falls within the scope of the Ramsar Convention for the protection of wetlands of international importance, is the only bird resting place in Europe that is almost completely surrounded by a city.

By the end of November, 40,000 to 50,000 birds usually spend the night on the lake, most of them large geese and summer geese, but observers with binoculars often see specimens of globally endangered species in the mass of birds.

The 220-hectare Öreg lake in Tata is considered to be Hungary's oldest artificial fish pond - almost 700 years old. The wild geese wintering on the lake come to us from up to six thousand kilometers away, from the northern regions of Scandinavia and Siberia, after the weather turns cold there.
