He was a great fighter, a fighter for the cause and survival of Hungarians, he played a prominent role in "deepening the crisis of the burnt out and uncertain communist dictatorship", he played an active role in its overthrow and the birth of the emerging new Hungary - it was said during the eulogy of the late writer and politician.
The statue erected in honor of István Csurka, writer, politician, one of the founders of the Hungarian Democratic Forum, founder and president of the Hungarian Justice and Life Party, was erected by dr. Historian Mária Schmidt, Director General of the House of Terror Museum, Member of Parliament Kristóf Szatmáry and Sándor Lezsák, Vice President of the Hungarian Parliament and Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the People's University Foundation, unveiled it. The bronze work of sculptor Györgyi Lantos was inaugurated on Saturday in Hungarikum Liget.
After the unveiling and blessing of the statue, Sándor Lezsák greeted those present. As an introduction, the host said that the Hungarikum Liget has now reached the point where the Christian pantheon in front of the St. Stephen's Chapel has been completed, which commemorates our martyrs, our confessors, the martyred high priests of the 20th century, he said.
Sándor Lezsák emphasized that in front of the Kölcsey House, the national pantheon pays tribute to those personalities who helped a lot in the creation of the Hungarikum Liget. The bust of writer and politician István Csurka, one of the founders of the Hungarian Democratic Forum, has now been completed - the politician emphasized.
Dr. Literary historian Zoltán Bíró, founding president of the Hungarian Democratic Forum, praised the work of István Csurka in his speech, highlighting his last completed drama, The Sixth Coffin.
– The sixth coffin is the final summary of the entire miserable Hungarian life. How did the people live through so much misery, lies, and the dismemberment of the country. The main character of the drama could even have been István Csurka, he said. Dr. Zoltán Bíró referred to the continuous attacks on the writer and then added: we must strive to make István Csurka's oeuvre a public treasure.
Dr. Historian Mária Schmidt, director general of the House of Terror Museum, emphasized in her speech: Csurka was a decisive figure in the system change. His battles fought with dedication in the people's tribune make him an unavoidable character of those years. Csurka was a great fighter, a fighter for the cause and survival of Hungarians.
He played a prominent role in "deepening the crisis of the burnt out and insecure communist dictatorship", he played an active role in its overthrow and the birth of the emerging new Hungary.
Csurka was right too early in everything. Timing is of the essence in life and politics. He was a bad timer, so he found himself in a headwind. He was declared an enemy of democracy. He was accused by those who did not get up from the meat pots even after the fall of the communist system. Csurka was worried about the future of Hungarians, his opponents so that their stained past would not be covered up - listed Dr. Maria Schmidt.
Parliament member Kristóf Szatmáry emphasized in his speech that István Csurka was a visionary ahead of his time. He may not have been right in his time, but even his former opponents cannot deny that he was right. It is time to commemorate István Csurka and his role in Hungarian history.
The bust of István Csurka was unveiled in the framework of the Csurka Memorial Year organized by the National Forum and the Young Conservatives Association for the Nation. The work of sculptor Györgyi Lantos was blessed by Géza Kókai, pastor of Lakitelek.
