For years, Didier Reynders "gave lessons in the rule of law and the prevention of corruption", before it was revealed that he was suspected of having laundered money in the order of millions of euros.
The European Parliament (EP) group Patriots for Europe is initiating the establishment of a commission of inquiry into the corruption case of former Justice Commissioner Didier Reynders, announced Csaba Dömötör, the European Parliament representative of Fidesz, in Strasbourg on Wednesday.
After the debate of the plenary session of the European Parliament on accusations of corruption in the public sector, Csaba Dömötör told Hungarian journalists that the outgoing Commissioner for Justice of the European Commission is being accused of money laundering.
For years, Didier Reynders "gave lessons in the rule of law and the prevention of corruption", before it was revealed that he was suspected of having laundered money in the order of millions of euros.
How can people who are suspected of laundering money, even on an industrial scale, decide on rule of law matters? he said.
He says that the EP faction "Patriots for Europe" initiated a debate on the matter, but "the coalition of the people's party and the left" prevented this, as well as an EP decision on the subject.
The European People's Party (EPP) is mainly responsible for this, because if the People's Party had not joined the left-wing factions in this matter, then the issue of Didier Reynders' corruption scandal could have been put on the agenda.
If hypocrisy had a thermometer, it would have stopped long ago - added Csaba Dömötör.
