The European Commission has protected the name "Vasi vadkörte pálinka". "Vasi vadkörte pálinka" is the ninth pálinka in the line after the previously registered names to receive EU protection.
The names that have been protected so far: Pálinka, Törkölypálinka, Békési plum pálinka, Gönci peach pálinka, Kecskemét peach pálinka, Szabolcs apple pálinka, Szatmári plum pálinka, Újpehértói cherry pálinka.
"Vasi wild körte pálinka" can be produced in factories located in the counties of Vas and Zala, using only wild pears collected from the territory of these counties, and only brandies that meet the product description can be marketed under the name "Vasi wild körte pálinka".
The use of geographical indications is a tool in the hands of producers that can represent a serious economic advantage. According to EU statistical data published in January 2020, the sales price of agricultural products with a geographical indication is on average twice as high as that of products without it.
