President János Áder and his wife Anita Herczegh are establishing a foundation to help children orphaned by the coronavirus. This was announced by the President of the Republic himself on Kossuth radio's Vasárnapi Újság program.
János Áder said that during the first and second waves of the coronavirus epidemic, it was not possible to hear news like now, during the third wave: young people, parents raising young children die and children are left orphaned.
"For weeks, my wife and I have been thinking about how to help this situation. I was wondering how many families and how many children could have been affected by this epidemic: we are talking about more than six hundred children and more than four hundred families," the President of the Republic pointed out. He added that the affected children should be supported financially at least until they come of age or until they obtain a profession or a diploma.
Regarding the foundation, he said that the legal preparations have been completed, the foundation document has already been prepared; "in a legal sense" the founder is János Áder, and his wife is a member of the board of trustees, and he also invited clinical psychologist Emőke Bagdi and physicist Diána Ürge-Vorsatz, who said yes. He added that the foundation has not yet been registered - the court proceedings will start next week - so they cannot accept donations for the time being.
The foundation starts with five million forints, which according to the President of the Republic is "their own savings". At the same time, János Áder is confident that support will come from his circle of acquaintances, even from a wider circle.
He emphasized that this program cannot be made a success without the help of local governments, mayors and clerks, as they know the affected families and the exact financial support that is needed.
He also said that they thought a lot about the name of the foundation, and finally decided on the name of István Regőczi, because the Catholic priest took care of orphaned children all his life, even before the Second World War.
