The renovation of the fort, which has been closed for many years and is now in a dilapidated condition, is the repayment of a debt of many decades. Conditions unworthy of a world heritage site prevailed at the top of Gellért Hill, in a prominent touristic location, at one of the country's most beautiful panoramic points.

In the first phase of the work, which will last until 2022, the reconstruction of the outer walls of the fortress and the restoration of the inner courtyard will be carried out. Thanks to the works, the green area will increase by one and a half times to 20,000 square meters in the renewed Citadel.

Inside the fortress wall, there will be a new public park of more than 6,000 square meters, in which a lake, a cafe and a 35-meter-high Hungarian flag will await visitors. New passages will be opened in several places on the fortress, so it will be more open and closer to nature than before.

By cutting through the walls, it will be easier to pass between the two sides of Gellért Hill. On the east side of the fortress, a spectacular staircase will be created, with the help of which visitors can easily approach the fortress from the Statue of Liberty. New viewing terraces will also be created, from which visitors to the Citadel will be able to enjoy the special panorama in the future.

From the northern bastion you can see Erzsébet Bridge and the Pest side, from the eastern terrace you can see the Szabadság Bridge, from the southern bastion you can see Kelenföld, while from the roof terrace of the gun tower building you can see Margit Island, Budavári Palace and Széna Square.
