The president of the European Swimming Federation (LEN) expressed his gratitude to the Hungarians for hosting the European Water Championships in this extraordinary situation from Monday. LEN is extremely grateful to the Hungarian government for its incredible support, especially to Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, who is a true friend of sports.
At the same time, thanks to the Hungarian Swimming Association for organizing our biggest event in this special situation - stated the president of the LEN, Paolo Barelli in the opening statement of the organization.
The continental competition for synchronized swimmers, divers, open water and pool swimmers will start on Monday, and due to the coronavirus epidemic, the event will be held in a bubble system at two locations, in the Danube Arena and the Lupa lake.
A record 1,100 athletes from 51 countries will participate in the European Championships. The first continental competition was held in Hungary 95 years ago, the country has hosted a total of five times, four times through Budapest, once through Debrecen, but this time, for the first time, Europe's best will compete under indoor conditions - with the exception of open water swimmers, of course. In the first week of the continental competition, the synchronized swimmers and diving competitions will be held in the Danube Arena, while the open water swimmers' competitions will be held on the Lupa lake. The European Championships for pool swimmers will take place from May 17.
