According to the Center for Fundamental Rights, in the last two years the European Commission did not deal with the topics that the citizens of the member states should have dealt with, instead it politicized by prioritizing its own goals.
István Kovács, the strategic director of the institute, announced at today's press conference in Budapest:
according to the Eurobarometer surveys, in 2019 migration and related threats - terrorism and public safety - were such topics, while last year due to the coronavirus epidemic "the focus shifted" to the health and economic effects of the pandemic.
István Kovács said that due to rule of law issues, the EC regularly puts Hungary and Poland on trial, but according to EU polls, the majority of people living in these states think that there are no problems with democracy in their country.
The Hungarian data are above average, 54 percent are satisfied with domestic democracy , while in other countries this value is significantly below 50 percent. He added: on the other hand, for example, only about a third of the people living in Spain and Greece feel that they have a say in public life, but these countries are not included in the ECJ's rule of law documents.
According to the analysis distributed at the event, the situation is further aggravated by the fact that even during the extraordinary situation caused by the coronavirus, the committee did not step back in enforcing its own political agenda. He came up with the same number of politically or ideologically charged proposals for this year as in 2020. As an example, it was said that the EC, taking advantage of the attention caused by the coronavirus epidemic, wants to "secretly" pass those conflicting materials through the system of EU legislation, which it would not be able to do in a sharp political battle. Examples include the committee's democracy, migration and gender packages.
