The government initiated the withdrawal of the Limes, the boundary line of the Roman Empire, as a world heritage site - 444.hu reported the other day. The Hungarian government contacted the affected states in a letter on June 8 about its intention, the article reads.
We contacted the Prime Minister's Office about the topic: they said that Hungary remains committed to ensuring that the 2,400 km long border defense line of the former Roman Empire along the Danube, or the Danube Limes, can be given the title of world heritage in its entirety.
They explained: according to the contents of the so-called Thematic Study prepared in connection with the declaration of the Frontiers of the Roman Empire as a world heritage site, our country considers the nomination strategy to be professionally supportable.
The 2017 document, "prepared with the cooperation of the most renowned representatives of the heritage protection and archeology profession", clearly states: although the Danube Limes is located in the territory of eight countries, it is considered a site and can only express the "Outstanding Universal Value" in terms of inclusion in the World Heritage List as a whole. .
