Katalin Karikó received the 2021 Reichstein Medal. The recognition of the Swiss Academy of Pharmaceutical Sciences can be the anteroom of the Nobel Prize.

"With the award named after Tadeusz Reichstein, a Polish-Swiss chemist and medical Nobel laureate, several researchers who later received the Nobel Prize were also recognized. The Reichstein Medal is awarded by the Swiss Academy to internationally recognized researchers who have done a great deal to popularize the pharmaceutical sciences through research, teaching and practical application," Telex reported.

The recognition of the Swiss Academy of Pharmaceutical Sciences strengthens expectations that Katalin Karikó may be one of the main contenders for the Nobel Prize, the newspaper believes. When the award was presented, they emphasized: "Katalin Karikó's contribution to mRNA research and its use in vaccines and medicines is fundamental. Your perseverance in the development of this new technology not only brought about a new era of vaccinology, but also contributed to rapid and mass immunization, which prevented the further spread of Covid," the eulogy reads.

"The example of Katalin Karikó proves the benefits of sometimes very long academic research for society," said Gerrit Borchard, president of the Swiss Academy of Pharmaceutical Sciences, at the award ceremony.
