Asylum laws should remain the exclusive competence of states. All this was stated in connection with the discussion of the European Union's new asylum policy in the European Parliament by the head of the Slovak delegation of the European People's Party, MEP Ivan Štefanec (KDH), who also called for a significant strengthening of the European Border and Coast Guard.
the velvidek.ma contains several quotes from the politician.
"The basic principle of our policy should be that no illegal immigrants can cross European borders. This should be served by the substantial personal strengthening of joint border protection and by the countries assuming greater responsibility for the protection of their own borders.
Those who apply for asylum in accordance with the rules and receive it, should not be distributed among the member countries, either against the member countries or against their own will," emphasized Štefanec .
He added that he approves of humanitarian assistance and support for people who are fleeing war or persecution or are forced to leave their country due to climate change, but according to him, this assistance "must only take place within the framework of observing the conditions of the member states and preserving their sovereignty."
