Today, more than 700,000 people, more than seven percent of the entire population, have a fishing license, and their fishing habits were revealed in the latest Agroinform.hu survey.
41 percent of the nearly three hundred respondents who filled out the professional portal's questionnaire go fishing at least once a week, and another 37 percent do so at least monthly. Although it is still predominantly a men's pastime, tens of thousands of women and girls now also indulge in this sport. 27 percent of the respondents were between 18-40, 43 percent from the 41-60 age group. The Hungarian National Fishing Association (MOHOSZ) registers nearly 80,000 child and youth anglers.
The vast majority, 62 percent, go primarily for carp, but bream (13%), perch (7%), pike and catfish (4-4%), and grass carp (3%) are also frequent targets.
The form of sport fishing appeared in Hungary more than two decades ago, the followers of which do not take the fish home, but release it back into the water.
The chosen company is also adapted to the need for recreation: most people, 38 percent, spend time by the water alone, 31 percent with fishing buddies, while another 31 percent visit the shores with family and relatives in most cases.
The reason for this is that more and more family-friendly infrastructure has been built next to lakes: playgrounds, buffets, places to grill bacon, etc. In Hungary, the 700,000 anglers can indulge their passion in about 2,200 registered fishing water areas, the vast majority of which belong to the MOHOSZ system. About 1,200 fishing associations currently belong to the organization of the association.
