Hungary and Serbia can count on each other, Hungary will give Serbia all the support it needs to become a member of the European Union, and if Hungary has difficulties, it can count on Serbia, Prime Minister Viktor Orbán said on Thursday in Belgrade after meeting with Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic.

At the joint press conference with the Serbian president, the Prime Minister stated that historical experience is important,

and when it comes to Serbia's EU membership, he speaks from a position of historical experience.

At the time of Hungary's integration, Poland was the key country in the region, he recalled.

He emphasized that the key country for the stability of the Western Balkans is Serbia.

By supporting Serbia's EU membership, Hungary supports the integration of the entire Western Balkans

he explained. He added that the EU has a greater interest in Serbia's membership than the country itself.

Viktor Orbán emphasized that although the epidemic pushed the question of mass migration into the background, this old problem is reappearing. Without the stability of the Western Balkans and its ability to defend against mass migration, Hungary will not be safe either, he declared.

He explained that there are serious successes behind us in Hungarian-Serbian cooperation, such as railway cooperation, 16 major investments even during the epidemic, and the connection of gas pipelines.

He believed that the basis of Hungarian-Serbian cooperation is that both countries want our children to live better than us, that both countries think in terms of family and nation. Serbia is also on a path that is worth moving on for the sake of the next generation, he added.

Viktor Orbán answered a question:

the epidemic is still here, but the vaccination program proved to be successful in Hungary and Serbia as well. Mutual recognition of vaccination certificates was agreed and all border crossings were opened, which is a major achievement for both countries

- He told. He added that cooperation will be maintained.

According to the Prime Minister, there is therefore a caution in the Union towards big initiative decisions, this is called enlargement fatigue, and they think that it is logical not to take on the tasks associated with enlargement.

But if there is no enlargement, one of the most important neighboring regions will be unstable, the EU will not get new energy, it will get stuck and eventually disintegrate

he thought.
