A fire broke out Sunday evening at the refugee center in Pozzallo, Sicily, because some migrants set fire to mattresses and other flammable furnishings, Italian media reported.
Thick smoke could be seen from the facility, dozens of Tunisian asylum seekers fled the burning center. According to reports, one hundred and twenty migrants, including twenty young people, were taken to safety.
Roberto Ammatuna , the mayor of Pozzallo, called on the police to find a solution to the problem of Tunisian migrants as soon as possible. They do not comply with the mandatory quarantine in the facility due to the coronavirus epidemic.
Italy is forced to face another wave of migration. According to data from the Italian Ministry of the Interior, 24,622 illegal immigrants have reached Italian shores so far this year, compared to 9,764 in the same period last year.
