The Romanian government has adopted an emergency government decree regulating the immediate removal of bears that threaten human life, which also allows the animals to be shot, the RMDSZ announced yesterday.
The statement of the association quoted the Minister of Environmental Protection, Tánczos Barna, who said that according to the decree, all big game that endanger the population within the settlements can be removed immediately.
He added that a so-called emergency intervention team is established at each municipality, led by the mayor or deputy mayor.
Based on professional opinions, this board decides on the method of immediate removal, which can be of three types: driving away the big game, anesthetizing it and relocating it, or euthanasia or shooting.
In order for immediate intervention to begin, the public must call the emergency number 112 to report the presence or attack of a bear. After that, the emergency service notifies the team operating in the given settlement, which includes gendarmes, the technical staff of the local hunting association, and a veterinarian in addition to the mayor or deputy mayor.
Tánczos stated: from now on, we don't have to say from Bucharest which bear is terrorizing a particular settlement, that's why we decentralized the decision-making process. "The current legislation is a guarantee that our mayors are not afraid to protect their community from danger and act courageously in accordance with the law," said the head of the ministry.
