"The protection of the rights of national minorities is as fundamental a value as the principles of democracy, freedom and equality contained in the Treaties."

At the invitation of Zsolt Németh, the head of the Ministry of Justice, Judit Varga will participate in a panel discussion during the day, where the protection of national minorities living in the Carpathian Basin and Europe will be discussed. The head of the ministry made this known in his Facebook post on Thursday.

In recent years, due to liberal and federalist aspirations, national minorities have almost automatically been put in a losing position in Europe, reminds Judit Varga, adding: Commissioner Didier Reynders has repeatedly personally asked the Commission to advance the issue of national minority protection, but "unfortunately, to this day, we cannot speak of coherent progress at the EU level". "In fact, we see that forward-looking initiatives such as the Minority Safepack have also been mowed down," emphasized the minister, who promised that everything will be done to ensure that the initiative of the Székely National Council does not meet this fate, so that finally in Europe also hear the voice of the Hungarian communities across the border.

"The protection of the rights of national minorities is as fundamental a value as the principles of democracy, freedom and equality contained in the Treaties. There is no hierarchy among values, the protection of minorities - thanks to Hungarian intervention - is included in Article 2 of the Treaty on the European Union in the same way as the rule of law. Interestingly, the European Commission usually refuses to include in its annual report on the rule of law the examination of the enforcement of national minority rights in individual member states..." - wrote the minister.
