Austria is strengthening its border protection because more and more illegal immigrants are trying to enter the country's territory again, Interior Minister Karl Nehammer and Defense Minister Klaudia Tanner announced on Saturday.

As a first step, four hundred additional soldiers will be put on duty, thus increasing the number of soldiers tasked with guarding the borders in Austria from 1,000 to 1,400.

- We are seeing that the number of immigrants apprehended at the borders is rising again: this year alone, 15,768 people were apprehended, while a total of 21,700 such cases were recorded last year, Nehammer said, adding that the European Union's asylum system has failed.

At the press conference, the Austrian Minister of the Interior explained that Austria does not receive support in this area from the European Commission, which "spends its time debating the issue of the distribution of refugees". Austria is particularly sensitive to illegal immigration, he pointed out, noting that one of the largest Afghan communities in Europe already lives there, while there are more than ten countries considered safe on the refugee route. - It is not possible for Austria and Germany to solve the Afghanistan problem for the EU - said Nehammer.

A few weeks ago György Bakondi , the Hungarian Prime Minister's chief adviser on internal security, reminded us that 13,396 border violators were caught in Hungary in the same period last year, while 44,186 border violators were caught so far this year.
