"Such a categorization system risks stifling self-expression and self-identity," writes the American Medical Association (AMA).
They strongly criticize the report issued by the American Medical Association (AMA), in which it proposed to delete gender from birth certificates. According to their position, the inclusion of gender "perpetuates the view that gender is immutable."
The measure was made public by the AMA in June and was proposed by the House of Delegates - the organization's political decision-making unit.
The news has now received renewed attention, as WebMD - an online publisher of news and information about human health and well-being - tweeted about the topic over the weekend.
The AMA's LGBTQ Advisory Committee supports removing gender from the public portion of the birth certificate and allowing it to be "visible only for medical and statistical use."
The commission is concerned that marking a person's gender encourages "marginalization".
"Assigning gender using a binary variable and placing it on the public part of the birth certificate perpetuates the view that it is immutable and does not recognize the medical spectrum of gender identity," reads part of the AMA report .
Many responded to the medical association's suggestion on Twitter, including Christina Sommers of the American Enterprise Institute, who responded: "Another trusted institution has lost its mind."
Former UN Ambassador Nikki Haley and Elise Stefanik also responded to the alliance.
“This is literally the most ridiculous thing I have ever heard. This madness must end!”
