Loránt Vincze: Our new task is to keep the issue of minority protection on the agenda in Europe - the FUEN (Federal Union of European Nationalities) congress has begun.
"In the European protection of minority communities, we are ahead of a decade ago, and during the coronavirus epidemic, which pushed all other topics into the background, we managed to make national communities, minorities, language groups, and nationalities visible and put them on the agenda of European politics through the Minority SafePack. Today, the case of indigenous European minorities is much better known, we are visible, we are on the map. We should be proud of the results we have achieved, and we should continue to build on them in the future, for which there are once again excellent opportunities, since the conference on the future of the European Union and the Hungarian presidency of the Council of Europe, which focuses on the protection of minorities, are suitable for us to thematize the issues that are important to us. - said Loránt Vincze, EP representative and FUEN president, at the opening of the organization's congress held in Trieste on Thursday.
Regarding the dialogue on the future of Europe, Loránt Vincze said:
"We must have a clear vision of the future of Europe and the place of our communities in it. We want to contribute to the construction of a common Europe and get the recognition we deserve. The future of Europe must also be part of the future of indigenous communities."
In addition to the mayor of Trieste, the regional minister responsible for local autonomy, the minister responsible for Slovenians abroad and the president of the association of Slovenian organizations in Italy, János Árpád Potápi, the state secretary for national policy at the Prime Minister's Office, also gave a speech at Europe's largest minority army review.
He called FUEN one of the most important international partners of the Hungarian government in uniting nationalities.
"We Hungarians know that the borders of a nation do not necessarily coincide with the borders of a country, which is why it is important for us to have European and international organizations like FUEN that undertake to represent national communities," he said.
He added that the Minority SafePack drew the attention of European decision-makers to the fact that Europe is much more colorful than it appears on the map.
After the opening speeches, the FUEN award was also presented, which Vincze Loránt presented to the Canadian professor Fernand de Varennes, the UN Special Representative for Minorities, for his consistent work on behalf of indigenous minorities.
In 2018, the special commissioner personally learned about the issues affecting the Hungarian minority in Romania in Transylvania, and participated in events organized by FUEN on the use of the mother tongue in Cluj and in Marosvásárhely on educational issues.
