Thousands of police officers are working to ensure that Pope Francis is safe in Budapest on Sunday, said the director general of the Counter-Terrorism Center at a press conference in Budapest.
Neither the Hungarian authorities, nor the Vatican gendarmerie, nor the major national security services have any information indicating a threat to the head of the Catholic Church, so there is no technical obstacle to the visit, János Hajdu .
In response to a question, he said that the neuralgic point of the several-hour visit is when the head of the church travels in the popemobile and is closest to the faithful. He added that the latter can only enter the area after an inspection.
"We did everything we could to keep the pope safe," said János Hajdu, stressing that they are cooperating with the police and intelligence agencies.
Speaking about the preparations, he said: together with the Vatican gendarmerie, they planned the Pope's route and its security from the airport to Hősök Square, as well as designated alternative routes.
He said that the Heroes' Square and the Museum of Fine Arts were prepared, which means not only a spectacular personal protection measure, but also weeks of fireworks work. The Pope's personal protection is provided by TEK and the Vatican gendarmerie.
