The Board of Trustees of the Egyházforum Foundation will award the "Fidentia pro ecclesia" (Courage for the Church) commemorative medal in 2021 to Catholic priest Attila Mékli for his evangelical preaching and authentic pastoral service.
Pastor Attila Mékli regularly undertakes to bring the gospel stories closer to people. With him, things happen to ordinary people, as he narrates, either in such a way that they attract, or even in such a way that they repel each other. From his stories, it can be deduced that the transcendent cannot be approached from imagination, nor from mystical rapture, but from the perspective of social relationships, because an encounter - if it creates really deep experiences - inevitably becomes spiritualized. Such an approach in the Hungarian Catholic Church requires courage, writes the Egyházfórum Alapítvány in a statement.
Attila Mékli has decades of history behind him, a serious human, clerical and professional achievement. He handles his "peripheral existence" within the church with humility and wisdom, and he lives his identity as a believer and priest authentically. Freely, without fear or compromise. Not looking to please anyone, but always self-identified. With serious intellectual depth, with a firm opinion, standing up if necessary, but not seeking attention at all, in any form. He gets involved in a true cause, even if it is visible, even if it is not - and he never gets involved in a cause to be seen - they write.
