Never before have so many people taken advantage of the unique Hungarian tax discount in the European Union, which goes to first-time couples, as last year. Based on the data from the social security declarations, in 2020 the 105,000 first-time spouses saved a total of HUF 4.2 billion, State Secretary András Tállai informed MTI.
The tax system supporting families and childbearing was expanded in 2015 with a tax discount for those getting married for the first time, recalled the State Secretary for Parliamentary Affairs of the Ministry of Finance. The option complements the family allowance for children, so Hungary, in an exemplary manner in Europe, essentially supports family founding through the tax system from the very beginning.
The state secretary noted that the government's many family support measures may also play a role in the fact that the institution of marriage is becoming increasingly popular in Hungary. According to the data of the statistical office, while slightly more than 35 thousand couples got married in 2010, by 2020 this number had almost doubled (to 67 thousand).
The rules are simple: for 24 months after the marriage, the spouses are jointly entitled to a HUF five thousand tax discount per month, which can also be used in addition to the family discount in the case of a child. The marriage discount applies if at least one of the spouses has a first marriage, explained the state secretary.
