Vaccines are the only solution and can protect humanity against the pandemic, Péter Szijjártó stated in his speech at the general debate of the 76th session of the UN General Assembly in New York.
According to the ministry's announcement on Friday morning , the foreign minister emphasized in his speech that the coronavirus has attacked the entire planet, including all its nations and inhabitants, so we must fight the pandemic together. As he said, the only answer is vaccines and therefore immunization, so successful protection is primarily a matter of capacity. The international community must be able to vaccinate the entire population of the world, and for this it must be ensured that the vaccines are produced in as many places as possible.
He emphasized: different vaccines should not be treated as an ideological or political issue, since they are means of saving lives. International, regional and national authorities must pursue a professional, fact-based process in licensing, excluding all other considerations.
Péter Szijjártó also emphasized that the pandemic resulted not only in a health crisis, but also in an economic crisis, and as a result, the value of direct capital investments globally decreased by 42 percent in the past year and a half, and the turnover of world trade by 5.3 percent. In this regard, he considered it important to note that the most important task facing the states is the preservation of existing jobs and the creation of new ones.
In his speech, he underlined that special attention should be paid to families, as the Hungarian government does, since parents bear a double burden. On the one hand, they have to work, and on the other hand, due to the closure of kindergartens and schools, they have to take care of the children during the day as well.
Another important consequence of the pandemic is that a significant part of life has been relegated to the virtual space, so many inexperienced users have gone online, who are easy prey for cybercriminals, the foreign minister said. He then added that, in addition to economic criminals, minors must also be protected from extremist ideologies and sexual propaganda. According to him, this would require regulation on a global level.
Péter Szijjártó then spoke about the danger of new waves of mass migration. He stated that the epidemic and migration can form a vicious circle, since the more places where the infection appears, the more people start, and the more people start, the greater the risk of the virus spreading further. Thus, migration nowadays carries not only cultural and security risks, but also health risks, the minister emphasized, according to the announcement.
