Rector Márton Tonk recalled : in the euphoria of the regime change in 1989 and in its "hooray optimism", the Transylvanian Hungarians hoped to restart their independent state university, which was lost in 1959.

Over a decade of mud wrestling and a complete lack of political will in Romania to establish a Hungarian university led to the realization that if there is no independent state university, then there should be a private, but still independent, university or university network.

the Sapientia Transylvanian Hungarian University of Science (EMTE) was started twenty years ago under the supervision of the foundation established by the historical Hungarian churches in Transylvania , with count in Romania.

Transylvanian Reformed bishop Béla Kató, president of the Sapientia Foundation, which operates the university, recalled in his speech: since 1581, when the Transylvanian prince István Báthori established a Jesuit university in Cluj, there have been countless attempts to establish a university. In different eras, the requirement that it is not possible to live a full life in Transylvania without higher education in the mother tongue was formulated again and again, but the established educational institutions were usually short-lived.

János Árpád Potápi , the State Secretary responsible for national policy at the Prime Minister's Office, called the institution "the flagship of value creation". "The struggle was not in vain, with its competitiveness and quality, Sapientia has become indispensable in both the Romanian and the Carpathian Basin education space, and has earned a place commensurate with the level of efforts," stated the state secretary.

Romanian Deputy Prime Minister Kelemen Hunor He stated: the Transylvanian Hungarian community needs guiding intellectuals, and the Hungarian university produces them. The politician considered it important that the Transylvanian Hungarians were able to put aside their disputes and unite in the big, strategic goals. It was also essential for success that the community found an ally and supporter in the Hungarian government.

As part of the ceremony, Bishop Béla Kató blessed the completely renovated building of the Sapientia University in Csikszereda.
