Ukraine's false communication campaign regarding Hungarian energy procurement failed miserably, as the European Union made it clear that Hungary concluded its long-term gas purchase agreement with Russia in a completely legal manner, the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade declared in Luxembourg during the break of the meeting of the EU Foreign Affairs Council on Monday.

Speaking to Hungarian journalists at his press conference, Péter Szijjártó Josep Borrell , the High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, made it clear that Hungary has the right to conclude such a contract, and there is no room for any complaints against it.

The EU High Representative communicated the EU's position to Kyiv as well, underlining that Hungary acted legally by signing the treaty, he added.

THE MINISTER OF FOREIGN ECONOMY AND FOREIGN AFFAIRS EMPHASIZED THAT UKRAINE HAS LAUNCHED A VIOLENT, HOSTILE, COMMUNICATION AND POLITICAL CAMPAIGN BASED ON LIES AGAINST HUNGARY. FURTHER, AS A NON-EU MEMBER STATE, HE COMPLAINED ONE OF THE MEMBER STATES OF THE UNION WITH THE EUROPEAN COMMISSION.

Ukraine wanted to make the security of Hungarian energy supply impossible. He seriously interfered in our internal affairs and took international steps that violated our sovereignty," he said.

Péter Szijjártó stated that Hungary's energy supply is a matter of sovereignty, and he will sign a contract for the provision of energy supply with whoever he wants.

Hungary most definitely rejects the hostile communication and political campaign to the Ukrainians, partly questioning Hungarian sovereignty, and partly portraying Hungary in a negative light, he underlined.

The politician reminded that, looking at last year and this year, most of the gas purchased in Europe arrived in Ukraine via Hungary. Knowing this, it would be unacceptable for Kyiv to limit the rights of the Transcarpathian Hungarian minorities.

Finally, Péter Szijjártó added that, in addition to the currently high energy prices, the importance of the Hungarian-Russian agreement on gas procurement is clearly visible.

Within the framework of the contract, Hungary can obtain gas at a good price while ensuring long-term supply, he emphasized.
