The European middle class is being killed by what the European Commission and its vice-president Frans Timmermans, the commissioner responsible for the green deal, are doing with the new climate package called Fit for 55 - Prime Minister Viktor Orbán said about the rise in energy prices on Thursday, arriving at the two-day summit of the leaders of the European Union member states in Brussels.
The Prime Minister believed that the activities of the committee and Frans Timmermans will raise energy prices, the signs of which are already visible, and the plans will lead to further price increases. It destroys the middle class, even though the entire European democracy stands or falls on the middle class, he warned.
"European democracy is endangered by those who skyrocket the price of electricity and gas. Therefore, these plans must be withdrawn and reconsidered," he said.
He called it characteristic that, despite the promises that all member countries would receive an impact study on how the Commission's proposals would affect each member state, no impact study was prepared. No report has been received, the EU committee wants to act without calculations, it will destroy the European economy, he said. This must definitely be ordered to stop - Viktor Orbán added.
The prime minister also spoke about the fact that there is a witch hunt in Europe against Poland, the truth is on the side of the Poles, we will stand up for the Poles.
He emphasized: none of the institutions of the Union have anything to gain in matters that the national parliaments have not handed over to the European Union; those matters belong to national constitutions and courts. "There is a stealthy extension of powers on the part of the EU, which must finally be ordered to stop. The Poles finally took the courage to open this battle. Our place is right next to them," Viktor Orbán added.
This morning, according to the news of MTI, the leaders of the EU member states adopted a final statement regarding the treatment of increased energy prices, the European situation of the coronavirus epidemic and the EU's climate protection objectives, said Barend Leyts, the spokesperson of the President of the European Council, in a Twitter message early Friday, during the two-day EU peak after the first day of work.
The heads of state and government of the EU member states announced in their final statement adopted at their summit meeting in Brussels: the package of measures presented by the European Commission in mid-October, aimed at dealing with the emergency situation caused by increased energy prices, contains useful elements in both the short and long term.
It was stated that the member states and the EU Commission should urgently, as best as possible, use the possibilities offered by the toolbox for the short-term management of the effects of high energy prices, in order to help the most needy consumers and support European companies.
They asked the European Commission and the Council to consider as soon as possible measures that could contribute to affordable energy for households and companies, make the EU's energy system more resilient and contribute to a safe transition to climate neutrality. The leaders also asked the European Investment Bank to investigate how it could accelerate investments supporting the green transition.
