The municipality of Helsinki has decided that, on the recommendation of the head of the climate protection group, it will not serve meat at city events from next year, but only seasonal vegetarian dishes and fish.
In the case of coffee and tea, cow's milk will be replaced by "milk" based on butter. Also, disposable dishes are no longer used.
Johanna af Hällström , head of the city's climate protection group, spoke to public broadcaster YLE about the new policy. He said: "This is one way to reduce the impact of food on climate change and the amount of natural resources used by the city."
According to YLE, Helsinki has also set a goal of halving the use of dairy and meat products by 2025. The broadcaster noted that in 2019 Finns consume around 167 kilos of meat per year, compared to less than 88 kilos in 1960. experts such as Mikael Fogelholm , professor of nutrition at the University of Helsinki , there is no easy way to reduce consumption, as meat plays a defining role in Finnish food culture.
The move by the city of Helsinki comes less than a month after a Cambridge University report called for food prices such as meat and dairy to rise in the fight against climate change.
"Interventions that reduce the affordability of unhealthy, unsustainable options and increase the affordability of healthier, sustainable options would also help change public behavior," says the report, which states that governments could influence the public through taxes and price mechanisms. "We're raising the price of carbon-intensive foods, including processed and red meat, dairy, and ultra-processed foods," says the report, which argues for lower prices for plant-based products, Breitbart reported.
2022plus: On behalf of our editorial staff, I can state that we will not participate in the official events of the city of Helsinki in the future either, because we were not raised at the University of Cambridge. We are not affected by nonsense beginning with "English scientists". Rather not, because other scientists consider moderate meat consumption to be part of a balanced diet.
Well, we love Hungarian cuisine , loops, sausages and bacon, tasty deep-fried meats and roasts, no less salami and crispy crackers. We are just so backward.
Oh, and we don't even ask for oat milk, that will only make us oat...
