Fifty-five thousand "migrants from outside the European Union" were settled in 2019 by Orbán, according to the candidate for prime minister of the left, but according to the KSH data, 38 thousand of them came from Europe, and among them there are probably Hungarians from across the border.
Telex reported the other day about another action of the left-wing prime ministerial candidate. At the briefing held at the southern border, the mayor of Hódmezővásárhely, among many others, talked about how Viktor Orbán settled 55,000 "migrants from outside the European Union" in Hungary in 2019, and even 43,000 in 2020 during the Covid-19 pandemic.
According to Márki-Zay's promise, the fence will be maintained, but the migrants settled by Orbán will be investigated, and the criminals settled by Orbán will be extradited in case of international arrest, whether they are Russian criminals or Islamist terrorists. By the way, the number 55,000 is shown on signs erected at the border and, according to a later announcement, at several other locations.
Misinterpreted statistical data series
politician who used to speak much more permissively about immigration and the integration of migrants
presumably, he worked from data available on the website of the Central Statistical Office (KSH), but he did not interpret them correctly,
and he missed the point with what he said. (The KSH is also mentioned as a source on the poster!)
According to the statistics of immigrating foreign citizens, named according to the country of citizenship, in 2019, 55,000 immigrants with foreign citizenship actually arrived in Hungary, compared to 43,000 last year. However, 38,000 of them came from European countries in 2019 and 29,000 in 2020, for example from Romania, Slovakia or Croatia. 12,000 people came to our country from Asia, and just over 10,000 last year, but also less than 2,000 from Africa each year.
In other words, the vast majority of the foreign citizens who Péter Márki-Zay labeled as "settled migrants" and "criminals" and presumably settled legally came to Hungary from EU member states, and among the 55,000 people, there are thousands of Hungarians from across the border, presumably with dual citizenship. However, the mayor clearly spoke about "migrants from outside the European Union" in his briefing.
