The driver of Gergely Karácsony was disciplined after it was revealed that the mayor was illegally overtaking those who were waiting in the queues by speeding in the bus lane with his official car, avoiding his own traffic jams. The people of Budapest joke and complain, they are fed up with the fact that nothing has consequences.
Karácsony learned from his mistakes and changed his tactics. After the City Hall sale scandal, the non-existent language test and the case of the fake academic degree, the mayor seems to have had enough of denying something, only to be denied immediately with evidence the next day. That's why he has changed his tactics: recently he is handing out disciplinary measures to his subordinates - while, of course, leaving everyone in their position. First, Barts J. Balázs, the president and CEO of the Budapest Capital Management Center Zrt., received sham discipline, as he allegedly tried to sell the City Hall without the mayor's knowledge.
And on Tuesday, Karácsony's driver was given a symbolic punishment after a motorcyclist recorded with his on-board camera how the mayor's well-known service car overtakes the line in the bus lane on the Erzsébet Bridge in the early hours of the morning, while motorists trying to get to work are stuck in traffic jams. After the video exposing his hypocrisy, Karácsony tried to explain himself to journalists like this:
"I don't remember driving in a bus lane while awake. I don't consider it completely out of the question that this happened after all".
The people of Budapest reacted with indignation and humor
The scandalous video, the confusing explanation that followed, and the apparent discipline of the driver did not leave the people of the Internet cold either: Facebook is constantly flooded with comments that are sometimes indignant, sometimes seasoned with ironic humor.
