The Dominicans celebrating a double jubilee – the 800th anniversary of both the death of St. Dominic and the beginning of the community in Hungary in 2021 – have published a book that gives a glimpse into the life of the founder and the history of the Hungarian order from the beginning to the present day. The volume published in the series The Monastic Orders in the Carpathian Basin was presented on December 3 at the Párbeszéd House.

800 years, 24 generations - the history publication celebrating its jubilee tries to cover this huge period. O lumen ecclesiae – the antiphon from the psalm of St. Dominic, with which the book presentation began, brings together the virtues that define the spirituality of the founder of the order: patience, purity, wisdom, and the teaching of truth.

Hilda Kőrösiné Merkl, president of the Secular Dominicans in Hungary, drew attention to the importance of the double jubilee in her welcome. Saint Domonkos, who received permission in 1216 III. From Pope Honorius to the founding of the Order of the Preacher Brothers, his heart was the conversion of the Kunis. So much so that before his death in 1221, he asked Pál Boldog Magyar, a professor at the University of Bologna, to come to Hungary and undertake this mission. This is how the Hungarian Dominican province was founded in 1221.

Provincial Vicar Andrzej OP Kostecki, speaking about the jubilee, highlighted the significance of the meetings. "The book also serves to draw attention to the fact that we exist and work. Building on the past, we look for the future. We learn from the past, which shows that sometimes we were up, sometimes we were down, we were able to start over from scratch. We look to the future with this experience. May we have another 800 years!”

The Dominicans are part of a series of books, the ninth volume. The series was started by László Legeza with the help of church historian József Török, with the aim of providing a comprehensive picture of the monastic communities in Hungary. László Legeza said that the publications presenting the history of the Basilites, Benedictines, Cistercians, Premontreans, Paulines, Carthusians, Paulines and Maltese were already worth their second edition. "If one of our books supports even one profession, our work has already been worth it," he added.

The volume was introduced by Dániel Siptár, director of the Jesuit Archives and Religious History Library. He emphasized that the double order jubilee has a very important role in strengthening identity and setting goals. It is important to present the history and specific face of the community both to the wider community, the social environment surrounding the Dominican monks, and to themselves.
