János Kóbor, the Ferenc Liszt Prize-winning rock singer and founding member of the Kossuth Prize-winning band Omega, died at the age of 79, the band announced on its Facebook page on Monday.
The defining figure of the Hungarian light music scene died on Monday. János Kóbor was born on May 17, 1943 in Budapest, he graduated as an architect from the Technical University. He was the singer and frontman of the band Omega, founded in 1962.
His name is associated with such hits as The Kerosene Lamp or The Pearl-Haired Girl. János Kóbor received the Liszt Prize in 1987, and was awarded the Officer's Cross of the Republic of Hungary in 1998. In 2013, he received the Kossuth Award as a member of the band Omega.
