The absolute majority (51 percent) of politically active Budapest residents who have promised to participate in the election believe that Gergely Karácsony bears political responsibility in connection with the City Hall scandal, according to research by the Nézőpont Institute. The case has dominated the agenda for months, but the mayor has not yet clarified his position regarding the case.
The news broke two months ago that the capital led by Gergely Karácsony is trying to sell the City Hall building through the key players of the socialist world before 2010. From the information leaked to the press, it now seems to emerge that the case involved prominent people from the former socialist world, who have now ensnared Karácsony's immediate environment. To date, the mayor has not clarified his position on the matter.
Four-fifths of the active voters (78 percent) answered yes to the question of whether they had heard about the case related to the sale of the Budapest City Hall. Of those who heard about the scandal, 60 percent believe that Gergely Karácsony bears political responsibility in connection with the City Hall case, while only one fifth (21 percent) think that he is not responsible. Even the former voters of Gergely Karácsony are critical of the mayor: more than half of Budapest's active voters (51 percent) consider the mayor responsible for the City Hall case (25 percent do not).
It is worth noting that 51 percent of Budapest voters voted for Gergely Karácsony in the mayoral election in October 2019.
