In recent months, Tamás Sulyok reacted to increasingly strong political ideas, which, in the event of a change of government, envisage the abolition of the Basic Law with the stroke of a pen and the dissolution of the body of the Constitutional Court.
"Constitutional courts, as safeguards for the smooth functioning of the legal system, ensure that the acts of the branches of power comply with the provisions of the constitutions. The Hungarian Constitutional Court, like other European constitutional courts, is a body that is the generally accepted guarantee of the rule of law and democratic functioning in European constitutional democracies"
- wrote Tamás Sulyok, President of the Constitutional Court, in his open letter addressed to the representatives of the branches of power, President János Áder, Prime Minister Viktor Orbán and Speaker László Kövér.
In recent months, Sulyok reacted to increasingly strong political ideas, which, in the event of a change of government, envisage the abolition of the Basic Law with the stroke of a pen and the dissolution of the body of the Constitutional Court. The president's statement in defense of the rule of law was made public on the board's website on Tuesday.
According to the president of the Constitutional Court, the views formulated by individual parties and clearly supported by intellectual circles that sympathize with them are direct and serious attacks on the rule of law and democracy and, as such, are completely unacceptable in a democratic state of law.
"The Constitutional Court exercises constitutional control over all branches of power, but the legislative and executive branches of power must jointly ensure its uninterrupted operation," the president emphasizes.
