According to the data of the Belgian statistical office, one fifth of the population is a migrant or of foreign origin, and just over half of the children born in Belgium in 2020 have a Belgian mother.
The statistical office Statbel points to an astonishing ratio, as the report reveals that 48 percent of babies born in Belgium in 2020 come from mothers who are either of foreign origin or a migrant.
The latter had a higher proportion, as the statistics show that almost 23 percent of newborns were born to mothers of foreign origin with Belgian citizenship, and about 25 percent to mothers with foreign citizenship. Last year, the average number of children per woman was 1.54, but this ratio varies depending on the nationality and origin of the mother. The figures show that while women of Belgian origin and citizenship gave birth to only 1.38 children on average, this ratio for Belgian citizens of foreign origin is 1.58.
Based on the statistics, there are also large differences in the age of women of childbearing age. While the age group between 25 and 35 with the highest fertility rate is represented by a much higher proportion of women of non-Belgian nationality, Belgian women born in Belgium or of foreign origin are represented in greater numbers in the older or younger age group, so in that age group, which is characterized by a much lower fertility rate.
