Hungarians are eating more and more healthily, this is supported by the data of the Central Statistical Office (KSH). According to this, the consumption of vegetables and fruits in our country has increased significantly in the past decade, just as dairy products have also decreased in recent years.
KSH data show that while an average Hungarian consumer consumed 37.8 kilograms of fruit and 48.1 kilograms of vegetables annually in 2010, by 2020 this amount had increased in both categories.
We consumed 46.6 kilograms of fruit and 60.3 kilograms of vegetables at the beginning of the new decade. In the case of dairy products, the rate of growth was slower than this, but the rise is unbroken. In ten years, per capita consumption of dairy products increased from 71.3 kilograms to 79.9 kilograms.
The written answer given by the Minister of Agriculture István Nagy to a representative's question revealed that more and more people can afford a healthy diet, as the CSO measured the greatest growth in the poorest strata.
In the poorest income decile of society, fruit consumption increased from 16.4 to 31 kilograms, vegetable consumption from 25.9 kilograms to 45.8 kilograms, and dairy product consumption from 54.3 kilograms to 67.2 kilograms. According to the minister, this is also a good indication that more and more of our compatriots can afford a healthy diet.
Thanks to the work of the government and the Hungarian people, the standard of living of the population has greatly improved in the past decade, and the food categories that are the basis of healthy nutrition have become more affordable, István Nagy pointed out.
