The State Secretariat for National Policy of the Prime Minister's Office is launching a commemorative year for Áron Tamási. The events organized around the oeuvre of the Székely-Hungarian writer born 125 years ago will start on January 22 in Marosvásárhely, on the occasion of Hungarian Culture Day.

"The name of Áron Tamási is a catchphrase for all Hungarians. With the commemorative year, we want to re-present the writer, his oeuvre, and bring his works closer to young people," said János Árpád Potápi , the State Secretary of the Prime Minister's Office responsible for national policy, at the press conference in Budapest on Tuesday.

As he added, Áron Tamási's work is an inalienable part of Hungarian culture, an integral part of Hungarian identity. "Áron Tamási believed in his Hungarianness throughout his life," he emphasized, pointing out that the programs of the commemorative year unite Hungarian communities all over the world.

The main patron of the commemorative year is László Kövér, the President of the Parliament. The organizers of the events are the House of Magyarság, whose director, Krisztina Csibi, highlighted at the press conference: the House of Magyarság is a regular participant in the commemorative years announced by the State Secretariat for National Policy of the Prime Minister's Office. He explained that in 2018, the King Matthias commemoration year, around three hundred events took place around the world.

Project manager Magda A. Szabó spoke about the main programs of the Áron Tamási commemorative year. As he said, there will be events in Hungary, in the Carpathian Basin and in the diaspora, including theater performances, exhibitions, literary evenings, a prose and essay writing competition, a short story competition and an illustration contest.

Áron Tamási was born in Farkaslaka, Transylvania, on September 20, 1897, and was laid to rest there in 1966. In between, he toured America, lived in Transylvania, and from 1944 in Budapest. With the commemorative year, we want to prove and make it perceptible to everyone that Áron Tamási was able to articulate important and essential things about our lives, faith, freedom, and soul, even for today's people," emphasized Magda A. Szabó.

The commemorative year starts on January 22, the Day of Hungarian Culture, in the Palace of Culture in Marosvásárhely. The location is symbolic, since Áron Tamási, who was neglected during the communist dictatorship, returned to Transylvania as a writer in October 1956, and read his novella written the night before. On this day this year, Spectrum Theater in Marosvásárhely presents his play Jeromos Tündöklő. The work is performed by the National Theater and is also on tour in the Carpathian Basin this year.

On the occasion of the commemorative year, Áron Tamási's most famous work, the Ábel trilogy, will be published in a special edition with illustrations by a graphic artist from Transylvania.
Study volumes are born, and the writer is also honored with a commemorative magazine issue. On September 20, Áron Tamási's birthday, a memorial ceremony will be held in Farkaslaka.
