From January to February, the proportion of those who had a negative opinion of Péter Márki-Zay, "the prime ministerial candidate of the left", increased from 59 to 62 percent, while the politician was unable to gain new sympathizers, the Századvég Foundation pointed out in its latest opinion poll sent to MTI on Thursday.
"Recently, several allegations have come to light on the part of Péter Márki-Zay, in the context of which the Hódmezővásárhely city manager expressed himself in public affairs by putting the generally accepted rules of Hungarian political culture in parentheses, made insulting comments towards certain voter groups, and formulated proposals that were significant surrounded by social rejection", they stated in February, referring to their research conducted by interviewing a thousand adults who pledged their participation in the election as certain or probable.
It was noted that, among other things, Márki-Zay spoke about "drunk" and "brainwashed" and "village, simple, ignorant" voters, and at a campaign event - among other things - about representing "communists" and "fascists".
According to Századvég, "it should not be forgotten" that, according to the left-liberal prime ministerial aspirant, "childbirth does not even need a doctor", since "it is not a disease", and in the fall of 2021, he explained that "yes, it must be accepted that it is an emergency or maternity care it should not be near people living in rural towns or even villages”.
They wrote that in February 2022, 62 percent of the respondents expressed an unfavorable opinion of Péter Márki-Zay, so the proportion of those who had a negative opinion of the politician increased by 3 percentage points compared to the January data, and by a total of 15 percentage points compared to October 2021.
"At the same time, it can be stated that Márki-Zay was not able to get new voters on his side. Based on the survey, it can be said that in February - the same as the data measured in January 2022 - 33 percent of those surveyed spoke positively about the prime minister candidate of the left-wing parties, although in October 2021, 42 percent of Hungarians still sympathized with him," Századvég said in a statement.
