Contrary to appearances, the European Commission recently made a very significant decision when it declared crickets as safe food. Don't worry, the cricket is a cute animal and an important source of protein in these crisis times.

According to the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), the appearance of insects on the food market is a very useful step. Beetles contain a large amount of fiber, fat and protein, but the costs of animal protein production are constantly rising, so the appearance of this alternative is not only positive from a health but also an economic point of view.

Compared to meat production, raising insects requires very little water. Moreover, much less greenhouse gases are produced during their breeding .

Of course, it is not a negligible aspect that the European Commission had to take into account the needs of the residents who have just arrived in Europe, since they cannot be forced to buy the delicacies they are used to from illegal sources.

The European Commission decided on February 10 that Acheta domesticus, i.e. domestic crickets, can now be considered as food and can be sold as such in frozen, dried or powdered form.
