According to Swedish Prime Minister Magdalena Andersson, although they live in the same country, they live in a completely different reality.
Sweden has failed to integrate the large number of immigrants it has taken in over the past two decades, leading to the creation of parallel societies and gang violence, Prime Minister Magdalena Andersson said on Thursday.
Many Swedes were shocked earlier this month after violent riots left more than a hundred police officers injured. The violence erupted after a Swedish-Danish politician set fire to the Koran at a rally.
Andersson stated that both Islamism and right-wing extremism have been unleashed in Sweden. "Segregation went so far that parallel societies were created in the country".
"We live in the same country, but in a completely different reality"
he declared at a press conference.
In Sweden, the number of foreign-born people has doubled in the last two decades and reached 2 million, or a fifth of the population. The Prime Minister said he wants to set up local youth crime boards to tackle the problem, where social services and the police can work together.
"In addition to massive immigration, integration was insufficient. The resources of society, the police and social services were too weak”
- He told.
Sweden, which is holding general elections later this year, has radically tightened its immigration policy since taking in more people than any other European Union country during the migration crisis in 2015. They now have one of the strictest policies in the bloc.
Human rights group Amnesty International has criticized Sweden's crackdown, saying it causes human suffering and makes it more difficult for immigrants to integrate.
