Most of those who continue to secondary education after the eighth grade have opted for the technical schools in 2022 as well, Gáborné Pölöskei, Deputy State Secretary for Vocational Education, pointed out to Magyar Hírlap during her admission evaluation. These institutions provide a degree that also offers progression to universities, and in the case of specialized further education, it is an advantage if someone comes from a technical school.
The final results of this year's high school admissions have officially been released, 98,000 students want to start their studies in September: a total of 85,286 eighth-, 7,829, and 5,299 sixth-year students applied for the announced courses. Gáborné Pölöskei, the deputy state secretary responsible for vocational training and adult training, pointed out to the newspaper that enhanced vocational training is very successful based on the choice of students, because technical schools are becoming more and more popular. As he said, most of those who moved on after the eighth grade decided in favor of institutions offering both the profession and the high school diploma in 2022, just like last year. The technical schools are far ahead of any other type of school, these schools were chosen by more than 42 percent of the applicants (34,831 people), emphasized the state secretary.
Gáborné Pölöskei commented on the attractiveness of technical schools: these institutions provide a degree that also offers progression to universities, and in the case of further specialized studies, it is also an advantage in higher education admissions if someone comes from a technical school. Among the advantages, he also mentioned that in the renewed and more flexible system, it is not necessary to choose a specific profession immediately, but it is sufficient to first select only the sector of interest.
After two years of basic training in five-year technical schools and one year in three-year vocational training schools, young people can make a more thoughtful decision about which profession best suits their plans and abilities. Even in the three-year vocational training course, you can acquire all the necessary knowledge to start a career that guarantees secure employment and a decent salary, explained the state secretary.
He also talked about the fact that new entrants to vocational training receive a general scholarship of HUF 8,000 to 16,000 per month. For those whose training continues in a dual format, in corporate cooperation, this will be replaced by a salary of almost one hundred thousand forints.
An important innovation is the career start support, which was first paid last year to those who successfully completed the professional exam.
At the end of the last academic year, around eight hundred received an average of HUF 230,000 after the vast majority of them achieved good exam results.
Young people emerge from the new vocational training institutions equipped with knowledge and practical experience in accordance with the expectations of economic operators, who can contribute to the better performance and more efficient operation of enterprises even during their study years.
Regarding language learning, the state secretary explained that in Hungary, German is the second most popular and most studied language after English, and in 2021 more than 14,000 language tests were taken. The state refunds the fee for successful secondary and higher level language exams (up to a limit of HUF 40,000) to young people under the age of 35. Since the introduction of the measure, more than 124,000 young people have received their money back. The middle school age group is the most active in language learning, according to the statistics of the Office of Education, almost 52 thousand of the 85 thousand language exams organized last year were taken by young people aged 14-19.
