May 10 is the day of birds and trees. In 1902, European countries signed a convention in Paris to protect birds useful in agriculture. Even this year, the ornithologist István Chernel organized the first day of birds and trees in Hungary.
This important day was officially introduced only a few years later, in 1906. On the initiative of Ottó Herman, the celebration of the day of birds and trees in schools was prescribed in a decree.
The celebration of the love and protection of nature has remained a tradition ever since. On this day, events and commemorations draw attention to the protection of nature and the diversity of trees and birds.
The Hungarian botanical gardens and arboretums await those interested with a diverse range of programs on the occasion of the important day.
This year's tree, the large-leaved linden, can be seen in 23 collection gardens, the herb of the year, yarrow, 26, the wild flower of the year, the May flowering of the protected agrarian wine can be seen in 6 gardens. The bird of the year, the green sparrow, can be observed in 24 collection gardens.
