In England, white boys start at a disadvantage in university admissions. According to Professor David Abulafia, the preference for applicants from public schools over "well-educated competitors from private schools" has become "obvious" in the last few years, but has been the case for a long time.
He wrote about this in the English newspaper Spectator.
According to him, university admissions have become another stage of culture wars, where "white", "male" and "privileged" are terms of disapproval, which are linked together to justify injustice.
The professor argued that "notional class" should not determine whether an applicant gets a place and suggested removing the schools' names from application forms.
He believes that "the truly disadvantaged applicants are arguably white males from elite private schools."
In the brave new world, therefore, talented English boys from good schools are no longer so welcome at university. Just because they are white, male, and come from an orderly environment.
