If we're lucky, this gesture could trigger the oil embargo!
The Guardian reported on Sunday .
After announcing the results, the band thanked everyone for their votes and for supporting the war-torn country.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyi also congratulated the members of the band, who won the third first place in the competition since Ukraine's debut in 2003. He said,
"We will do everything we can to one day organize the competition in the port city of Mariupol. In the Ukrainian, free, peaceful, rebuilt Mariupol"
- underlined the Ukrainian president, referring to the fact that, according to tradition, the next competition is always hosted by the winning country.
In his message sent on Telegram, Zelenskiy finally said: "I am sure that our victory in the battle with the enemy is not far away."
They could travel to Italy with a special permit
The winning song, which mixes elements of rap and Ukrainian folk music, was originally written in honor of Stephania's mother. The band dedicated the composition to all Ukrainian "matriarchs", as lines such as "I always find my way home, even if all the roads fall apart" took on a new meaning in the context of the war.
The band members had to request a special permit to leave Ukraine and travel to Italy during the war, the portal wrote.
This is how Balázs Németh reacted to the news on social media:
"The world is saved! Ukraine won the Eurovision Song Contest. The professional jury did not see the Ukrainian candidate as the best (well, it could have been a Putinist jury...), but the TV viewers of Europe did! Thus, the Ukrainian rap trio won last night in Turin with a great advantage. This is a stronger stand for Ukraine than if everyone colored their Facebook profiles blue and yellow. If that doesn't help, nothing will!
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen immediately congratulated her on Twitter. If we're lucky, this gesture could trigger the oil embargo! (Let's hope the Western press will allow the politicians in Brussels to exchange the 'oil embargo/Eurovision victory'!) Last night, all real Europeans did what they had to do."
András Hont wrote the following:
"I completely understand that Zelenskiy would take Eurovision . I would also flee the city on this news."
