Lajos Koltai is directing a movie about "the savior of mothers", the world-famous Ignác Semmelweis, and Attila Szabó is filming a documentary about László Bölöni, the great Hungarian football player from Romania, with the support of the National Film Institute.
Lajos Koltai directs a romantic historical film about the world-famous Ignác Semmelweis and his time, starring H. Miklós Vecsei and Katica Nagy. The Film Professional Decision Committee of the National Film Institute voted for a subsidy of HUF 2.26 billion for the production of The Invisible Killer. The shooting of the movie, which is being made with a crew of about 120 people, will begin in July and the film will be available to the public next year, the National Film Institute told MTI on Friday.
Passion, perseverance and consistency
The story begins in 1847, in the pre-revolutionary atmosphere, at the Vienna obstetrics clinic, the young teaching assistant Ignác Semmelweis simultaneously fights puerperal fever and the ironclad views of his conservative bosses. A young Austrian nurse helps the search for the mysterious pathogen that causes the disease.
"Semmelweis feels that it is his job as the chosen one of fate to find the cause of puerperal fever. Despite all the attacks and intrigues, he continues on his way, guided by his obsessive and uncompromising personality.
We want to make a film with the driving force of passion, perseverance and consistency. It is a quirk of fate that our world today is again fighting such an invisible enemy," Lajos Koltai was quoted as saying in the announcement.
The invisible killer is made from a screenplay by Balázs Maruszki and Anett Kormos, produced by Lajos Tamás and József Vida.
It won't be a classic sports movie
The documentary László Bölöni – The Story of a Legend will be shot from July with the production support of 96.1 million forints from the Film Institute, using his unpublished autobiography, about the most successful Hungarian football player in Romania of all time, László Bölöni.
Using the universal language of football, the Bölöni film tells a European story on the one hand, and also presents a complex Central European fate on the other.
The film is based on the idea of Tamás Kollarik, director Attila Szabó and the script of Tamás Kollarik, in collaboration with expert György Szöllősi, produced by Tamás Novák.
The boy from Székely with a difficult fate will be the team captain of the Romanian showcase team, Steaua Bucharest, and the Romanian national team, and then the national team captain. The creators present the life journey of László Bölöni, which leads from Székelyföld to Bucharest, from communist Romania to Western Europe, and from the village track to the final of the European Champions Cup.
Alongside László Bölöni, Romanian football stars, Hungarian teammates and European legends will speak. In addition to Cristiano Ronaldo and Imre Jenei, Valentin Ceausescu, the son of the Romanian communist dictator Nicolae Ceausescu, also appears in the documentary, which works with a lot of archival material and presents previously unpublished material.
"We are not making a classic sports film. Although the film takes you through the life of László Bölöni, it also shows the current social and political space. His career is impressive, as a footballer and then as a coach he visited several European clubs, cities and countries. At the same time, László Bölöni is also exemplary as a person, since he became one of the greatest footballers in Romania while remaining Hungarian all the time," said Attila Szabó.
