Hungary and Serbia can count on each other, "these two countries are safe, whether it's gas or food products," Prime Minister Viktor Orbán said on Saturday in Novi Sad, Serbia.
In his speech at the opening of the 89th International Agricultural Fair in Novi Sad, the Prime Minister emphasized that both he and the Serbian president had won the election and that "at this time one can rest without care", but one can see inflation, rising prices, the threat of famine in many parts of the world and the military clashes on the territory of Ukraine. The good news, however, is that Hungary and Serbia can count on each other, and that both countries are strong in agriculture, "Serbia and Hungary actually represent Europe's important food reserves," he explained.
At the fair - where Hungary is the guest of honor - the Prime Minister explained: "Serbia is prepared for winter"; you have to prepare thoroughly, "and I see that you have succeeded". "We are also on the right track, but we still have some decisions to make," he added.
The Prime Minister reminded: in 2020 and 2021, the heroes were the nurses and doctors, and the heroes of this and the next year will be "farmers, who have to work in very difficult conditions, endure and adapt to rapidly changing conditions ”, and it depends on them whether there will be bread on the table, whether there will be famine in the world, or whether we will be able to provide for the people.
He emphasized: it is an important interest to be able to supply everyone in the world with bread, because if it does not succeed, then huge crowds will leave for Europe not only in the hope of a better life, but also for survival, and "then the migration that has happened so far is it will be a children's tale compared to what follows".
Viktor Orbán stated: Hungary will not accept decisions from Brussels that are economically unreasonable and that would mean a price increase that would make it impossible to use the full agricultural capacity. Hungary is a country of ten million people, but if they manage well, they can provide food for twenty million people, he explained.
The President of the Republic of Serbia, Aleksandar Vucic, emphasized that results speak louder than words, thereby indicating how much the relationship between Hungary and Serbia has improved in recent years.
Aleksandar Vucic pointed out that a very difficult winter awaits the whole world. He emphasized that the people living in Serbia have not yet experienced or seen this, because Serbia has everything, but you have to prepare for all eventualities. He added that he discussed with Viktor Orbán before the opening of the fair how to survive this crisis and how the two countries could help each other.
Since both Serbia and Hungary have significant agriculture, there will probably be no need to help each other in this area, but if one or the other country were to lack anything, its neighbor is ready to help, underlined the Serbian president .
He said that if the war in Ukraine does not end, a quarter of the world will face serious food problems. "That's why it's important to secure energy carriers and food for ourselves," he stated, then continued: "if we cooperate, it will be easier for all of us."
He added that Serbia also wants to acquire a significant amount of energy carriers, but the country does not have storage capacities, and the Hungarian Prime Minister promised that Serbia can also use Hungarian reservoirs.
