President of the Republic Katalin Novák reminded in her Facebook post on Saturday morning that this is Hungarian National Defense Day. On this day in 1849, the army led by General Artúr Görgey recaptured Buda Castle from the Austrian troops.
The head of state wrote on his social media page:
Now, when a war is raging in Hungary's neighborhood, we feel it even more: we need a strong, stable, effective force capable of guaranteeing Hungary's independence, territorial integrity and the military defense of its borders.
The key to Hungary's peace and security is the Hungarian Armed Forces, whose roots go back to 1848-49.
I greet all Hungarian soldiers and national defense employees - both at home and in foreign service! As head of state and commander-in-chief, I count on their dedicated work.
